It's supposed to be hard...

This job is not easy. It is demanding, stressful, and never ending. This job is not easy, but it is rewarding.

I found myself at the brink of tears at the end of this week. We began to meet with students to request their courses for next school year and the revolving door of uncooperative, loud and at time unruly freshman pushed me to my limit.

In times like this I try to remember why I love my job, but it is in times like this that is hard to remember. I would like to say that everyday is rainbows and ponies and unicorns, that I love my job, and stressful days don't get to me, but that wouldn't be true. It is interesting, because I also find that there are some stressful days that I thrive on. It all depends on the situation, and the other things going on in my life.

So, I am taking this moment to reflect on what I love and why I do what I do day in and day out. Why did I choose this profession of school counseling?

1. Kids are awesome - all ages - they are amazing
2. I can listen and respond without judgement
3. You want to do amazing things with your life? I want to help you get there!
4. Schools are places of growth and opportunity
5. I get to share in student's joys and successes

Today I begin

Today I begin a new adventure.

My personal New Year's Resolution for 2015 was one of adventure. Adventure can mean a lot of things. For many adventure is travel or new and exciting experiences. For me adventure means trying something I haven't tried before with abandon - no fear of the unknown - with pure joy for what it could bring, and the knowing that it could possibly bring nothing.

So it here is one piece of adventure for my new year. A new blog!

The purpose of this blog is to share my ideas, stories and musings if you will, and bring forward the stories of others who are in the profession of school counseling. It may become more than that, or the purpose may change, but that is where I am starting.

I think it is important in any community to share stories and get feedback. Positive or negative, the experience is the adventure.

Today I begin. Sharing what brings me so much joy, frustration, adventure and love - my job as a school counselor - daily ups, downs and every which-ways!

To any reader, if you have a musing to share, post a comment below with your contact information and I will get in touch with you for the possibility to be a guest blogger.
